Dear Friends,

One thing that unifies all of us is trauma, or as we put in Buddhism, the shared experience of human suffering. How we talk about this suffering changes what we assume about its causes and remedies.

When I think about it as anxiety, then a whole host of physiological and psychological issues comes to mind.

When I think about it as the felt experience of oppression, then ideas about social structures, conditioning and decolonization come to mind.

In Buddhism, this term ”suffering” encompasses this wide range of unnecessary suffering that we experience. Lately, however, I have been thinking of suffering in terms of trauma, the ultimate form of dukha as that invisible weight that shapes us, binds us and blinds us – but sometimes can be used as a stepping stone to practices of liberation.

This contemplation of trauma made me think of the Meditation Instructor Training in a new way this year. As we prepared this year’s course, on the forefront of my mind has been how crucial understanding of trauma adaptation is to the situation we are facing in our society. The anger, the denials, the glib admonishments towards positive thinking – social media is like a textbook display of trauma responses. And I have been seeing this in our responses not just to the pandemic and politics, but also in our responses to issues of racism and sexism. A large-scale awakening is taking place – but so is a showcase of maladaptive attempts to deal with suffering.

I am inspired and stretched by the challenge of training meditation instructors who will be prepared to step into this climate of turmoil. What does it mean to train teachers to be of service in such tumultuous times? I am driven by this question of how to prepare teachers to share Buddhist techniques for self-regulation, care for self, others and world – while there is so much rage, pain, denial, danger and depression.

Before, I framed it as a training that could provide the Buddhist philosophy of mind and body and Buddhist ethics to provide a more tradition-rooted approach to meditation teaching. I had already included a feminist agenda in there – driven by the question of how we can create responsible, ethical meditation instructors who will make Buddhism safe for vulnerable people.

Then the pandemic hit. And George Floyd. And the protests. And four million acres burned in California all around us. And the skies above grew thick with dark and toxic clouds of smoke.

Standing under the weight of all these circumstances, I let the scope of the Meditation Instructor Training expand to accommodate the great need to address acute suffering through contemplative practice. It is now a 150-hour training, spread over four months, a requirement which is on top of the three years of meditation practice prerequisite. The result is a training that goes in-depth into techniques and philosophy while it also reconsiders the Meditation teacher as someone who must be prepared to lead students into inner knowledge while they are weathering their toughest times.

It can be heavy and distressing to think of all these topics, whether you are joining the upcoming training or not. If so, we can take breaks, take our time and reach out to our networks of support.

It is also important to realize that all forms of oppression grow their power from our disconnection from our inner knowledge. Trauma rules our lives through our avoidance techniques (even though for the time being avoidance may be the best we can do).  It is clear that the suffering of collective and institutionalized oppression gains power from that disconnection too. In Buddhism, we often repeat this core belief – that suffering comes from our disconnection from intrinsic wisdom. But the alternative to disconnection is to connect, and that is the complex, epic journey we embark on through practices of liberation. Somehow, step by step and painstakingly, sometimes crawling along and sometimes by leaps and bounds, it is possible to unravel the roots of suffering.

I have always loved that Dzogchen says that fundamentally, we are not just our suffering, there is also always something present in us which has remained wise and whole. As we listen to our body, cultivate a sense of wholehearted presence, act and speak with congruence with our highest values, when we listen and practice empathy – these are moments when we are living beyond the bounds of colonized, conditioned mindsets. This is how we break the chains. This is how we relieve suffering and live from a whole, good, loving place. In this sense, Buddhist practice gives me great hope that we can experience liberated moments and cultivate cultures of non-harming.

So it is coming to pass, that, in the middle of a global pandemic, while our forests have literally burned down around us, during this time of collective trauma and collective awakening, I will be training meditation teachers. I hope that this training will facilitate relief, empowerment and connection with inner knowledge.

I am pleased to be facilitating this training once again alongside my wonderful colleagues Aruna Rigdzin and Dr. Satya. This will be our fourth cycle of the online format. We begin on Saturday, October 31st. If you haven’t enrolled to join us yet, you can by Clicking Here: Meditation Instructor Training.

If you have already completed meditation teacher training, I encourage you to take the new modules on trauma-informed meditation teaching and mindfulness of power. You are welcome to join me:

November 14th – Trauma Informed Meditation Teaching

January 16th – Mindfulness of Power

For those of you who do not join us, you can still participate in our year-end meditation challenge.  November 1st marks the first day of our “100 days of practice” annual meditation challenge. Starting on November 1st until Losar, the Tibetan Lunar New Year on February 12th, our entire community (at least those willing!) will practice meditation every single day.

I invite you to join us in pledging to do a daily practice. Whether it be five minutes a day or one hour a day, the important thing is the consistency and continuity. Training the mind in calm and focus requires consistency above all else. It will likely be a difficult period to maintain practice within. We are currently in a charnel grounds more than a pure land. But there is something empowering about remaining disciplined in the inner work during such troubled times.

If you aren’t sure how to do the meditation for the 100 days, As always, we will be there to support you in your practice and study.

We have planned these programs to support you (Timezone Converter):

Janak leads Meditation Mondays at 6pm Pacific Time to learn Zhine – Calm Abiding (for Members)

Dr. Satya leads White Tara Practice on Monday, Nov 23rd at 6pm Pacific Time (for Members)

Pema Khandro leads the last online Chod Training of the year on Nov 10th – 11am LA / 2pm New York / 7pm London / 6am Sydney

Pema Khandro leads Ngondro Training 18-20th

12pm LA / 3pm New York / 8pm London / 7am Sydney

This includes the Lung – the transmission to practice.

May you and all beings be free from suffering and its causes. May you and all beings have strong health, safe places to be and moments of peace. May we listen and understand others and use our voices in all the forms of love whether that is gentle or fierce.

Yours in dharma,
Pema Khandro logo

Dear Friends,

Our upcoming program goes into the complex topic of Buddhism and Sexuality. We will talk about non-celibacy, consorts, sexual abuse and sexual orientation. These are sensitive subjects – but also important areas for investigating buddhist philosophy and ethics.

I hope that this program and the recent conversations we had about these issues in Vajrayana Training classes last month will help to promote a culture of awareness, learning and prevention from harm through education.

It may be surprising why I raise these issues, afterall, I love Buddhism and for me Buddhist practice has been profoundly healing, it is a primary means through which I recover from the weariness of misogyny. It has offered me the methods through which I find peace again and again on a daily basis, and the view through which I make sense of my life. Its resources are profound and many of the positive qualities of my life are due to Buddhist practice and study.

Yet, I also advocate that it is important not to take a naive approach to our study of Buddhism, if we do, I think we will miss its greatest gifts. One of the things I treasure the most about studying Buddhism is learning from the rich history of debates, struggles, contested issues, challenges, victories and failures that have taken place over the last 2500 years of the Buddhist tradition across cultures and contexts.

I include the broader perspectives of history, views of different traditions and contested issues in classes I lead for a reason. Buddhism is a part of a bigger world and shares the same issues as the world, openly engaging with that will only enrich and empower us in our journey of genuine wakefulness.

I believe that leaders in Buddhism, like every religion, every sector of society, every neighborhood and every family must address issues about misogyny and sexual abuse and that its our duty to have difficult conversations amongst ourselves and our communities so we can open up new possibilities for undermining abuse. I don’t have all the answers to how we can best do this and I am grateful for my scholarly training to prepare me for these conversations -but even with that background, it’s very humbling to attempt to address the complex issues at hand.

But I believe that sometimes even though we don’t have answers, those can be periods of greater awakening – through our willingness to sit in the questions and open up conversations.

These three recent classes in Vajrayana training last month were too short a time to discuss such an important subject and we barely scratched the surface. Talking about these issues is difficult and complicated, more so than such a short time allows. The bottom lines for me are the Buddhism commitment to relieving suffering and preventing harm, and the commitment to waking up, developing further and further awareness. Since there is much more to examine on these topics, I will be doing our final mini-series of the year on the topic of ethics in Buddhism and Sexuality, starting next monday. This is announced below, I hope you will join us for each night, since they will each cover a different topic and perspective.

In our adjustments to the schedule after the California fire situation we were late out of the gate in terms of sending our announcements out so please do share the announcements on social media when you see them to help us get the word out.

Dakini Mountain continues to be safe from the fires and has blue skies. We are soon fixing our water and we did a fire clearance around the lodge thanks to amazing efforts by Aruna.

Finally, we have only been able to continue to offer programs through the pandemic because of donations and pledges and donations to the Dakini Mountain Emergency fund. Thank you every person who has donated Please consider making a donation today to help keep our activities going! Here is the link, we need all kinds of support big and small.

This series provides a platform for contemplating these questions and the greater context of Buddhist ethics. The goal is to raise awareness, promote education and highlight resources. Dear Friends, It has been difficult to see the California fires continue, where so many of our community live. My prayers go out to everyone affected. Thankfully Dakini Mountain continues to be far away from fires and continues to be safe. We have decided that since so many of us must remain home to go ahead with the Dakini Day Chod tomorrow, especially since we may have only a couple of them left before the end of the year. Chod is a meditation especially for working with ones mind in difficult times so it is an important time to train. We have also adjusted some of our fall schedule in light of so many things taking place, the pandemic, the fires in California and power outages. That new schedule is enclosed below. May bodhichitta be our ground. Wishing you moments of peace,

Dear Friends,

This week has been a potent, intense, inspiring week of conversations about compassion and rage, inner change and social change. Each night I met with the guests, Charles Eisenstein, Jan Willis, Venerable Thubten Chodron-la and Myokei Caine-Barrett, Shonin. For those of you who could not be there, here are some of the most memorable moments for me.

Speaking with Jan Willis, we talked about the role of humility in working with our anger and I had relayed advice from a conversation I had with another teacher who said in response to some harassers who were bothering her, “Its ok, I am just a worm you can’t humiliate me.” I had shared what a relief it is to contemplate that and in so doing, cheerfully embrace being a small being in a huge world. Jan interrupted me and said, “But EQUAL, we are all equal.” Contemplating the equality of all beings is something Buddhists do frequently as one of the major tenets of Buddhism, but it came through so beautifully in that moment. Oh to be small beings in a huge world, where we all want to be free from suffering and still we are all equal, every one of us equal.

Another favorite moment was last night speaking with Shonin when I had asked her how she had felt when she saw the video of George Floyd. One of the reasons I invited Shonin was because of her work teaching Buddhism to White Supremacists. But the question had come from one of the audience members, and we both answered it. We both described grief and sadness. And then one of things she described was the feeling that we would all have to get very strong to deal with this. It was this spontaneous reflection of bodhichitta, the altruistic enlightened intent. It’s something I think of every day – what kind of education would we need to put out in the world so something like this never happened again?

It seems to me there is a lot of sadness and grief moving through society that has been disowned and gets expressed through aggression. My article on grief just came out on LionsRoar – so you may want to read it if you haven’t yet.

It starts with a quote of Shabkar who said, “Sadness rages like a great fire, though in mind, there is no wood. A storm of tears pours down ceaselessly, though in the sky of my eyes there are no clouds.[1]” —Shabkar
The full article is here: When Sadness Rages Like Fire

But probably one of the most interesting things was the comments during the talks, sent to me by the listeners in the chat box. Based on that I have totally scrapped my original plan for Saturday and I have decided instead to teach a class on Buddhist Tantric theories of anger and power called – Rage as a Path to Liberation. We have contemplated Mahayana so much, this will open up another perspective. I want us to explore Buddhist methods beyond spiritual by-passing. Also – I am eager to present this class and also be able to share some perspectives as a historian of Buddhism. If you would like to join you can register here:
Rage as a Path to Liberation

So Saturday morning’s **new schedule** will be as follows below. I look forward to seeing you there. Come to it all or come to what you can.

The videos from this week are still being produced so you can listen-in on my conversation with Lama Harvey Aronson and his discussion of disowned anger and the differences between traditional Buddhist ideas of anger and how the term is used in English. Reconciling Eastern Ideals and Western Psychology

Much thanks to everyone who has donated to the Dakini Mountain Emergency Fund, this year’s fundraising efforts are more crucial than ever because of the drastic effects of the Pandemic on our community.

Wishing you resilient presence through all that has been and all that is to come,

Pema Khandro logo

Bodhisattva in Troubled Times
Rage as a Path to Liberation

This is a week-long series about the practice of compassion and care in troubled times. In the face of trauma, fear, aggression… what is the place of love and empathy? In the midst of moral outrage and the imperative to change society, how do we proceed without magnifying aggression and hate? This series is dedicated to contemplating possibilities for facing difficulties with a mind set upon altruistic action and connection with others. The “Bodhisattva” is a Buddhist term for a person dedicated to care for self, others and the world through compassionate action.

  • Explore alternate theories of social change
  • Delve into perspectives for harnessing anger, frustration and grief
  • Investigate possibilities beyond spiritual by-passing
  • Explore the integration of activism with compassion.
  • Consider the relationship between self-care, caring for others and caring for our world.
  • Delve into intersectional identities in a complex and diverse world.

Join internationally renowned Buddhist scholar and teacher, Pema Khandro and guests in this week-long event dedicated to opening up a conversation about how Buddhist values might unfold in the midst of an avalanche of intense situations.

Dear Friends and Members, PemaKhandro_42ngakpa.org

I never knew that I could fall in love with a land. But it happened to me twice. Once was in Eastern Tibet and the next time was at Dakini Mountain, the two places share this sense of stunning expanse and beauty. I have had a long time dream of establishing a pilgrimage site for Vajrayogini in the West and when we found our land in the Tahoe National Forest, I knew that the era of Dakini Mountain was dawning upon us.

Vajrayogini is an important symbol. Visually what is stunning about her is that she is a female buddha in warrior stance. Her image speaks volumes about Buddhist tantra – the embrace of embodiment, the empowerment of the sacred feminine, the potential to awaken some free and crisp aspect of mind. Vajrayogini symbolizes the compassion which is capable of being fierce or gentle, passionate or peaceful, according to what is needed to relieve suffering.

When we meditate on the buddhas such as Vajrayogini, it is not because we are worshipping an external god or deity. Quite the contrary, what we are venerating is the beauty and power of the nature of mind. There exists some aspect in mind which is Vajrayogini – free, powerful, passionate but devoid of self-grasping. It is vividly engaging experience, yet without self-deception. Awakening this aspect of mind is why we do Vajrayogini meditation. Vajrayogini is an emblem of inner freedom and the capacity of all beings, even those deemed unlikely or unworthy, to realize and embody that freedom.

This weekend we are consecrating our Vajrayogini shrine at Dakini Mountain and along with it we will have an online weekend meditation retreat and Vajrayogini and empowerment. I invite you to join us for this auspicious occasion. Practicing meditation and visualizations together at this time is an important way for us to decompress, recalibrate and tune into our quiescence. We will have meditation classes together as well as a community tea time to keep in touch and reconnect. And of course there will be the lung for the three Dakini Chod (the Rinchen Trengwa) and the empowerment for Vajrayogini.

If you can, please join us for the whole weekend and if you are unable to attend all weekend, then we welcome you to participate on Sunday, when I will be hosting the very accomplished Venerable Drupon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche as our guest teacher.

If you are not able to join in person, but you would like to sponsor the mandala offering for yourself or for your loved one you can click here to make a donation: Mandala Offering for Loved Ones

For mandala offering sponsors – when we make the mandala offering prayers will be read out and the enormous positive merit generated by our practices will be dedicated to yourself and your loved ones.

Also you may wish to choose to donate to our Dakini Mountain Emergency Fund here: Dakini Mountain Emergency Fund

We have been affected by the pandemic which has meant the missing of our retreat season. Every donation will help us to continue Ngakpa International’s humanitarian activities and to continue to sustain Dakini Mountain through these perilous times. Click Here to Donate Now

Finally, I want to finish with some notes of encouragement. Times are so difficult right now, so self care, doing retreat, engaging in daily meditation and exercise are essential. There are other options besides gaslighting and denial. But self-regulation is a key to being able to have these other choices. We do not have to live in fear, we can instead spread empathy, compassion and self-compassion. We must be brave and choose love.

Yours always,
Pema Khandro logo

From May 29th-31st, join us in an online meditation retreat led by Pema Khandro. We will also host special guest teacher Drupon Rinchen Dorjee Rinpoche who will bestow the Vajrayogini empowerment. The weekend will focus on a Buddhist meditation retreat in your own home, through an online retreat format.
